At 1:24 a.m. on April 26, 1986, near the city of Pripyat, the largest nuclear power plant accident in human history occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, known as the Chernobyl disaster. Two explosions that occurred within a few minutes damaged the station’s 4th reactor, and radioactive particles of iodine, cesium, and strontium were released into the atmosphere. This made the cities of Chernobyl and Pripyat uninhabitable for many years. As of today, a 30-kilometer area around the station is considered an exclusion zone. A video tour of Chernobyl and the city of Pripyat 35 years after the disaster will help you see everything with your own eyes.

The dangers of excursions to Chernobyl today

And although 35 years have passed since the nuclear power plant accident, its consequences are still felt. The sarcophagus, which was built in 1987, is gradually collapsing, and this may cause a new tragedy. According to various estimates, the volume of radioactive substances remaining in the 4th power unit is 95% of what it was at the time of the accident. And they will remain dangerous for hundreds of years. To prevent a repeat of the tragedy, a new sarcophagus, “Protective arch,” was built. It was put into operation in 2019. It guarantees safety until 2120… And then?
