A Garden Born of Love

While some gift flowers, Sofiyivka offers an entire garden. The park’s story begins with a grand romance between Polish nobleman Stanisław Szczęsny Potocki and Sofia De Witte, a Greek beauty who later became Countess Potocka. During a visit to Warsaw, Sofia was captivated by the “Arcadia” park and wrote to Potocki, dreaming of a paradise of their own near their home.

Potocki, ever devoted, wasted no time. He commissioned a masterpiece—a park that would stand as a testament to their love. Construction began in the late 18th century, transforming a rugged landscape of hills and ravines along the Kamianka River into an architectural marvel. The natural terrain became the foundation, soon adorned with trees and flowers from across the globe, grottos, pavilions, waterfalls, fountains, and sculptures of Greek gods. An island was even artificially created to enhance the romantic allure.

Given Sofia’s Greek heritage, the park’s design weaves in strong Hellenic influences, making it a symbol of eternal love and beauty. Today, it draws hundreds of visitors daily from Ukraine and beyond. Welcome to Sofiyivka Dendrological Park—a place where every corner tells a story.

Exploring Sofiyivka: A World in One Park

Wandering through Sofiyivka feels like traveling across continents. Whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, or thrill-seeker, there’s something here for everyone. The park has multiple entry points, but let’s start our journey from the South.

Southern Section: A Taste of Switzerland

The main entrance lies in the southern part. Where ornate metal gates in an ancient style open onto the Main Alley. Often dubbed “Little Switzerland” for its lush greenery, this area sets the tone for the park’s charm.

  • Tarpeian Rock: Perched along the central alley, this rock features a gazebo atop a stone outcrop—an ideal spot for those seeking solitude amid nature. The name nods to a Roman legend about Tarpeia, a woman who betrayed Rome and was thrown from a cliff later named after her. Thankfully, Sofiyivka’s Tarpeian Rock carries no such grim history; instead, it offers serene views and a peaceful escape. Learn more about the Tarpeian Rock legend.
  • Silver Springs: This horseshoe-shaped fountain features two bronze bowls overflowing with vibrant flowers, while clear water flows down the center like a soothing melody. It’s a refreshing stop for travelers on a hot day.

The Main Alley ends at the Flora Pavilion. A graceful structure marking the transition to other park sections: an asphalt path to the Upper Pond (Eastern Section). A left turn uphill to the modern Western Section, or a descent to the Lower Lake (Central Section). Let’s head to the Central Section next, home to Sofiyivka’s iconic fountain.

Central Section: A Glimpse of Ancient Greece

Дендропарк, Софіївка

This area evokes the myths of Ancient Greece, with spots that feel like the abodes of gods.

  • Lower Lake and the Snake Fountain: The park’s centerpiece, the Snake Fountain, is a 16-meter (52-foot) jet of water bursting from the mouth of a coiled serpent resting on a rock in the Lower Lake. Remarkably, it operates without pumps, powered solely by the lake’s natural water levels—a feat of engineering that mesmerizes visitors. You can also rent boats resembling Venetian gondolas to glide across the lake to the Assembly Square, where a temple-like structure honors Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Explore more about Greek mythology.
  • Great Waterfall: For those who prefer walking, the Venetian Bridge offers stunning views of this cascading waterfall. Legend has it that if you pass by without a drop touching you, your wish will come true. Nearby, statues of Greek deities—Venus, Paris, Hermes, and Cupid—line the upper alley.
  • Eden Garden: The Assembly Square feels like a divine retreat, with wooden benches, diverse trees, and shrubs surrounding a pool of exotic fish. At its heart sits a bronze vase brimming with flowers—an unusual yet captivating sight.
  • Grotto of Fear and Doubt: Test your bravery here. Touching the stone inside is said to boost confidence. While a rock alone won’t change your life, it’s a symbolic start to bold decisions.
